I think the innies are AIs that are initialized with an imprint of parts of the outies' brains.
I think that the outie and the innie share a subconscious, or rather that the innie shares the outie's subconscious, using it as a source for ... emotional entropy? raison d'etre? the je ne sais quoi of humanity?
i think if you, say, put an ai in a comatose or brain-dead person's brain, you'd get a mind without a "soul." i think that such an individual would be portrayed as very one-dimensional, almost robotic.
