# Use yt-dlp
## In place of YouTube-dl
[YouTube-DL](https://yt-dl.org/) is a popular command-line tool for downloading YouTube videos, Unfortunately their website is being blocked due to a tyrannical Germany court ruling. However, you can still access [youtube-dl's GitHub website](https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl).
The (2021.12.17) stable version of YouTube-DL does not work anyways, but the nightly builds do . . . providing you know how to grab and install those.
Becasue of all the RIAA's legal drama causing issues with youtube-dl, many people have now switched to yt-dlp.
The version of yt-dlp from your repositories most likely does not work anymore, so you may need to [grab 👉 the latest directly from GitHub](https://github.com/yt-dlp/yt-dlp/releases/latest), and execute it from within the directory you download it to.
Don't forget to give it executable permissions using the chmod command like so...
```
sudo chmod +x yt-dlp
```

Of course you can avoid all this hassle by installing [BraveNewPipe](https://github.com/bravenewpipe/NewPipe) onto your Android phone, using the [Obtainium app manager](nostr:nevent1qqst7yyv59gu9d4ycwefgpzjxt5xt4mu382z93zuzdzzv5zqz78txmspz3mhxw309akx7cmpd35x7um58g6rsd3e9upzqndled79mkuzf8uu06uvy8spnuy0h7m7ch0d2sytv9zep04c6954qvzqqqqqqylcagqh), and then simply tapping the download arrow to download any video to your phone.
