This example just proves that Jeff Cliff is right: complex numbers are a better foundation for math than natural or real numbers. Indeed, if the great John Gabriel were willing to forget about the reals, to forget about his mortality, and work exclusively in complex numbers, then he would see that the cubic curve *does* have horizontal chords, such as the one joining the points (omega, 1) and (1, 1) where omega is a cube root of unity.
