Engineering experience in large companies in 2024: provisioning even the simplest thing (a Kafka topic, a Snowflake asset or a new service), even for testing/sandbox purposes, involves:
Writing your own code
Asking 2-3 extra people to review and approve your code
Adding your configuration to a Helm chart (+ ask for review)
Adding your configuration to a Terraform/Ansible repo (+ ask for review)
Adding your configuration to Kubernetes (+ ask for review)
Creating/requesting all the required permissions to add/modify the code + the data + the service configuration
Asking access to all the data assets involved
Navigating through 10-20 different wiki pages with often overlapping or self-contradictory documentation for different pieces of the process - often owned by different teams who don’t communicate with one another to have a full overview of the process
Regularly poking anyone in this process (reviewers, administrators, code owners etc.) who may not timely process your requests
Product management experience in large companies in 2024: “Why can’t we get anything delivered?”
