As an educator, I think there are two different sides to this issue.

On the one hand, a lot of compulsory subjects in secondary school or even university may prove to be 'pointless' from a facts-based perspective. For example, the average student will never remember when the Battle of Hastings took place, where it took place, or who was involved.

Yet, certain subjects are useful in building up skills or developing a larger worldview. For example, maths or statistics courses can develop our numeracy skills that can later be applied to real-life problems, whether that be taxes or office reports. History, English, and similar subjects can also help us to develop our composition and speaking skills, which can help us now with our report writing, marketing, and related tasks. It's not all for naught!
