The drugs change the chems but then your body gets used to it and requires a higher dosage for the same effect. It ultimately becomes a cope as you become more and more resistant to the chem. Using chems to fix emotional/psychological issue is more akin to treating the symptom over the root cause.
Actual schizophrenia and whatnot is its own can of worms though.
