The side-by-side comparison of Germanic and Roman lexiconal inheritances fundamentally provide for more precision in terms of sense. These just aren't available to someone speaking Icelandic who can only call upon Roman cognates in a shakey and unfamiliar fashion, and fundamentally wouldn't be able to distinguish between spiritus and geist without already having a longstanding familiarity with English.
I have this feeling that you actually know some Icelandic. I don't know why. I was going to suggest you could pursue further reading, but perhaps that's unnecessary.
