Post.news is shutting down, it was a well funded alternative with a focus on news with micropayments. They had a growth hack where you needed to post a link to your post.news account from twitter in to activate your account.
My take away that when you build a social media app as closed source and centralized it can be expensive to build and run. When the money goes away it can’t just survive on its own supported by the community.
Nostr would survive and grow if we lost all the funding going in to Nostr from investors and donations from jack (npub1sg6…f63m). The clients and relays are open source and cheap to run. Media servers like nostr.build cost money to run but can be community funded, and if it goes down we’ll be able to switch to alternatives.
