Far from the IA/ML hype, my Phd student and I are working on a computer time proposal, and it is ever so despairing to rediscover that to do a reasonable job at modelling the kind of very very specialized stuff we usually want to model in this business, the very minimal allocation we need is going to end up putting 10 tons of CO2 in the air on an "energy-efficient" last generation supercomputer, in a country with a very favourable energy mix from the strict CO2 emission point of view. To hell.
