It's not. Opal is not any more delicate than any other gem. You just have to use good opal. Bad opal cracks.
Ethiopian opal is universally bad opal. Everyone who tells me it isn't eventually admits their prize piece cracked. I've never had to wait more than 8 years to be proved right.
