Something they are missing is that at nearly any point in history people had a house or some kind of dwelling unit to live in. You could be a peasant, get a small piece of land and build a simple home and raise a family.

So it's not returning to some old normal of being poor and struggling. Its a new phase of humanity where you can't even afford the basics and having a family feels impossible for many. While at the same time the tech exists to build cheap prefab homes, any trip to home depot proves this. Largely the bureaucratic structure regulated dwelling units to keep the price of real-estate high with little to no alternative.
