Thinking out loud: I think an interesting monetised model for relays could be allowing users to top up their account via lightning, balance stored on the relay, with posts subtracting from the balance.
Clients can seamlessly manage this behind the scenes.
On top of that: users can optionally set a notification mechanism associated with their public key, e.g. pushover, telegram, etc, to receive notifications when they get mentioned.
Going to try to build a proto type of this over the next few days
