ironically, I'd feel much better about doing real time control in 1989 than today.
There is just a lot going on in a modern Linux on a (semi) modern chip, there is just so much going on. Paring that down is tough and uncomfortable has tradeoffs. Far easier to farm it out to an MCU for rt stuff.
Putting them together would allow non-RT critical stuff on Linux (sensors, etc.) and keep the motor control RT. All in one package.
