Super Metroid really holds up, despite some jank here and there of the time and era. The atmosphere is an utter masterwork. These guys didn't just watch and love Alien, they internalized it, they understood it on a very deep level. And clearly not just Alien but several other sci-fi movies of the era and style. Super Metroid creates a masterwork of atmosphere on every level with excellent art and sound design, and it manages to do this with levels that are largely just totally context-free caves with little rhyme or reason and only rarely telling a story. That makes it even more impressive.
