Reading about the Lafferty murders in "Under the Banner of Heaven" caused me to reflect on one of my many issues with religion: how it indoctrinates people into unquestioning obedience. Take the horrifying story of Abraham and Isaac: that if a voice in your head tells you to murder your son, you should do it. No! If your religious leader or boss or family or Trump or a voice in your head tells you to do something unethical, something that hurts others, you should pause and apply critical thought
