The government grants can only be had for land parcels over 1 hectare (2.4 acres), which is a bit of a bummer. There are quite a lot of places to get free trees though. The Woodland Trust is my go-to for those. I've previously self-planted a two acre field and it wasn't the trees which cost the money, it was the tree guards. There are far too many deer in this country!
