I view that piece as a hyperbolic example of the hyperreal.
I get that the message is utterly 'on the nose', but it is nonetheless a valid one; reality has been replaced by signs and symbols, Vietnam itself is now a simulacra, with a rocking 60's soundtrack.
My interpretation is that there is no contrast between Disney, Vietnam, and McDonalds, all three are symbols detached from any real meaning.
As Bauldrillard put it: "The simulacra hides the fact that there is no real. The simulacra is real".
