In the early days some did it to confuse twitter refugees but not only did twitter self-destruct but also changed the blue checkmark to a symbol of simping melon husk and people made relentlessly fun of people who paid money for that.
iirc it got so bad that elon gave people a blue checkmark when they made fun of people having said checkmark "as a punishment" or make them look hypocritical or whatever.
