So clear yet so hard to see, and lots of people probably feel it happening but refuse to acknowledge the severity of the issue and/or the amount of unpaid labor they put in.

I think people fall for the trap and feed social media japps because of hope: things are probably stressful at home, their communities lack jobs, they have little to no social interaction outside of screens, their credit cards are maxed out, etc.—the whole city life package, and so they hope something online will come along that will ease the pain.

Ultimately the productive thing to do would be to convince ourselves, and maybe others around us, if we can, that the internet dream has become a technocratic blood-sucking, attention seeking machine, and that human interactions and self reliance are much greater when they come from the real world and real people rather than from a posting content spree.
