Her kidneys actually improved slightly. She finally ended up dying of stomach cancer at almost 20 years.
As for what causes it cats just need water and they don't really like to drink water so you have to make it your life's work to make them drink water. I give my cat paté morning and night with water and I give her a liver treat once a week that's mostly water. I've tried other things but she rejects them. You can put a little broth in water or tuna juice. You can also put out multiple water bowls. Some cats also like the fountains that circulate the water.
