So, what about the obvious alternative: releasing the uncombed archive? Somebody is probably happy enough to organise it for nostalgia value, at no cost to Microsoft. And it's not like any of the hypothetical passwords that they might have forgotten into the source tree of a piece of software released thirty years ago is still valid, either.
