I think a key point that hasn't been covered in the comments yet is that, for a lot of people, maths is (misconceived to be) esoteric and ineffable, and all it takes is for one person to utter something that sounds impressive (whether true or not) in the right company and a percentage of that company will believe it without questioning it: "you can find any number you like in pi" sounds accessibly impressive, and there have been less plausible-sounding claims plastered on the side of buses that a great many people have nevertheless wholeheartedly believed. A percentage of __those__ may go on to repeat such a claim in a similar fashion.

Has pi been proven not to be a normal number? Are there any 'famous' irrational numbers which are also proven to be normal? By 'famous' I mean ones which the average non-mathematician are likely to have heard of.
