Fallout 4 pro tip: companions will stay where you tell them to. If you don’t want to be hunting them down when needed, do what I do: completely wall-in the Red Rocket near Sanctuary so the only way in or out is Fast Travel. Travel in with you companion and tell them to stay put. They stay in the walls. Can’t guarantee this works in Survival mode because f that. Also: Nick is funny as fuck to have around.
