The United Nations' rights chief, Volker Türk, expressed horror at the escalation of violence in Sudan and the impending famine. Türk held separate phone calls with Lt-General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, urging them to de-escalate the situation. He warned that fighting in El-Fasher, where over 1.8 million people are at risk of famine, would have catastrophic consequences. Thirteen months of war in Sudan have left 25 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, including 14 million children. At least 58 civilians have been killed and 213 others since fighting escalated in the North Darfur town of El Fasher. The UN aid coordination office warned that diseases are closing in and people are facing famine. $2.7 billion is urgently needed to reach and support 15 million of the worst-affected people.
