if you have clarity on this, I would be so grateful to hear from you: one of the few parameters (partly to save my sanity) of #othernetworks is that networks should not have been "on" the internet. I've taken this to mean it didn't use TCP/IP and of course now I'm on the home-stretch of this book, I worry that's incoherent. but, to counter myself and to ask YOU: computer conferences/message boards/discussion forums did for a time operate outside the internet? they did not necessarily use TCP/IP?
