I suspect mining equipment isn't as efficient as it can be since the money so far has been in big hashpower with obsolescence. More expensive components could perhaps make equipment last longer and give bigger profits on a small scale but then the manufacturers would have to adjust their business models. So far perhaps they haven't needed to.
