I feel like there's a fine line between "solo polyamory" and "dating multiple people at the same time" which is way more common a behavior because it still tends towards monogamy at some point.
In the same way, I feel like polyamory often starts from a monogamous situation. I don't have numbers, of course, but it's been the most prevalent experience described in the little I read about it.
