On February 4, 1974, the Symbionese Liberation Army abducted Patricia Hearst, daughter of publisher Randolph Hearst, from her apartment in Berkeley, Calif. In 1789, George Washington was elected the first president of the United States. In 1792, Washington was unanimously elected to a second term. In 1861, the Apache War began with the arrest of Cochise. In 1938, Adolf Hitler took command of the German army. In 1945, the U.S. Army liberated the Santo Tomas Internment Camp in the Philippines. In 1976, a magnitude-7.5 earthquake struck Guatemala City, killing an estimated 23,000 people. In 1983, singer Karen Carpenter died of heart failure. In 1997, O.J. Simpson was found liable in the killings of his former wife and her friend. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg launched Facebook. In 2006, widespread Muslim protests turned violent over caricatures of Muhammad. In 2012, Russia and China vetoed a U.N. Security Council effort to end violence in Syria. In 2023, U.S. fighter planes intercepted a Chinese surveillance balloon.
