Yeah...well i don't know who that is, but it's a cultural thing. Islam calls practices like that Jahaleia, practices from the time before the Prophet. For example, it was and is common practice in resource restricted societies to bury baby girls. They do this in the Amazon still.

Islam put an end to that in the arabian peninsula and Islamic lands beyond, completely.

Many of the restrictive laws you feel are against women, are part of a system to take care of them and into old age in a more organic way then the welfare state. The veil does not need to be worn around family/household members, just as in general non muslim women do not go outside in their underwear, but might around their kids and husband.

It's not viewed as oppresive from within the society, but a clear distinction of roles and family/public realms. Why ? Because family is very important and explicitly organized. Male/ Female needs are met in a fair and organic way, in line with human psychology and biology. The entire point of Sharia.
Something like women being forced to do porn or work office jobs and never have children from a lack of obligated male family support, in non muslims lands, is viewed as oppresion. Oppresion of the Human being.
