Your original post reminded me to f what I've been reading lately in Buddhist philosophy about the self being different than continuous thought.
Also got me thinking about flow states of action when you aren't really thinking but very actively involved in what you are doing. What part of "you" is involved in that process? It seems to be more than just your thoughts.
Like you said, thoughts can have a life of their own. Authors talk about books writing themselves.
