I suspect when we look back at this era we’ll marvel at the hubris we had at imagining we were close to AGI, or building tech that smarter than humans.
We don’t even understand our own brains or really how they work! We don’t understand consciousness.
How can we build something smarter than us when we don’t even know how smart we are? We are so stupid we don’t know how smart we are.
Yes, we can build something that can beat us at chess. We can also build something that’s taller than us too.
