in short, the older sister ship of titanic, olympic, had a collision with a military vessel shortly after its launch (fact), during which it allegedly (it did not) suffer irreparable damage and would be a write-off (no) so the white star lines did an insurance scam by swapping the two ships by switching nameplates and decors (they did not and could not, the ships aren't even same enough) and intentionally sunk the ship to collect insurance money, supported by a claim that a bunch of rich people were supposed to take the maiden trip but mysteriously cancelled in the last moment (they did not, even then, titanic maiden voyage wasn't actually that major event back then, it only became one *after* the sinking, people would take it opportunistically if it fit their schedule, it wasn't some kind of a world changing event everyone wanted to participate in)
