Which country is doing a better job right now at dealing with the onrushing climate crisis, China or the United States?

By most objective measures, you'd have to say China. The US seems to be trying, sort of, but thanks to the capitalist imperative of profit over all other concerns, progress has been far too slow. And meanwhile, the US continues producing more crude oil than any country ever, as it has for the past six years.

So, do we want the United States to shift to a more top-down, authoritative energy regime, similar to China? Or is "freedom" still the most important thing?

These might be uncomfortable questions, but they're important to ask.

Brett Christophers, professor at Uppsala University in Sweden, is the author of "Our Lives in Their Portfolios: Why Asset Managers Own the World" and also "The Price Is Wrong: Why Capitalism Won't Save the Planet."

In this challenging essay, he asserts that "Capitalism Can’t Solve Climate Change." Please read it, and let me know what you think.
