Right. 😄 What happens in practice, when I do it, is that the reads outpace the writes until Linux has a certain amount of dirty data in its writeh back cache (configurable via /proc). At that point, all disk I/O other than writes will pause (and the system can become almost unresponsive) until the amount of dirty data falls to another, lower, configurable level. Once that's happened, the reads start again.
