It breaks my heart to see a fellow 'CNN alumnus' talked about this way, but sadly you're right. Linder was way ahead of his time back in the day but his tenure as steward of an online dissident community ironically has some similarities to turbo. He had very poor choice in associates and occasionally promoted trolls who did nothing but D&C his own community. VNN was growing and growing, and he basically killed that growth by starting the VNN forum where he required users to self-doxx. Yet he evidently still allowed pseudonymous contributions to the old/main site from some folks even later, so this 'new phase' only served to scare everyone with a real job or life away and propel Linder into the farby brownshirt marching circuit where he had screeching public meltdowns. I used to run a gag Fakebook sock account to follow public figure WNs literally named after a certain mass shooter (tho the name was somewhat generic/common) and designed to look like the profile of either some glowing MKULTRA assassin or an over-the-top parody of one. Incredibly, the only person who really talked to me on it, for hours at that, was Linder. It was the only in-depth conversation I had with him where he communicated like a genuine human being. A little baffling, or maybe not, as I couldn't get more than a dismissive one-liner out of the guy if I tried to check in with him on anything with a more genuine Internet footprint.

It seems that most who knew him had no idea, but il ragno got his start in VNN Mailbag world also. Not sure if you knew, but he's apparently no longer among the living. In light of that, I'll just say that the way he related to actual and potential allies/supporters could be similarly...baffling. He couldn't be bothered to respond to a comrade who shared the same trenches or who even had his back to draw aggro away from the looney-bin of wannabe hacktivists and doxxers who surveilled and raided those communities, but turns out he'd drop everything to relate his entire life story to some relatively noob female sperg. Yet still both were great writers, cut-ups, and hatchet-men in their day.
