In older models it was actually pretty easy and doable at home with some basic tools. I have experiences with iPhone 6S and iPhone 8.
Since most manufacturers stepped up their water-proof game it’s recommended to use a service of a professional. I did - and it cost me $110 total. It will cost a bit more in Western Europe or the States but still worth it I believe.
