Right now most relays don't seem to actually host the data (such as an image), they just host the link to the data. The front-end just downloads the image (or whatever) from the link and then displays it alongside the note, unless I'm missing something.

So if you basically just standardize tagging, and then have some error handling on the part of relays and clients to handle notes that are tagged but don't abide by what the tag indicates (i.e. someone attempting to publish a "short form video" tagged note that doesn't include a video of $length and $codec... or even any kind of video at all), it shouldn't really matter where the data is hosted, because it's just another user-operated filter.

You're just saying "please show me posts of this specific nature," and the clients/relays are using tags (which don't even need to be visible) to try and find them.
