I don’t know if it’s nostalgia talking, but IMO one of the things worth missing about the world of the 1980s and 1990s, roughly until 9/11, was the displacement of a lot of noxious politics into really creative occult paranormal theory. And not just in the West! Post-Soviet Russia was very influenced by occultism.
Parapolitics and conspiracy theory had a bit of a Cambrian explosion at the end of the Cold War and it all ended during the Bush era, coming back to bog-standard reaction. Give me cryptids and funny money and UFOlogy over boring old armed fascism any day.
