I believe it has been 8 years since we put in these first little raised beds, then we got backyard chickens, then we added blueberries and fruit trees and compost bins. I got 86 quart jars of pickles from this tiny backyard garden one summer.
In Oct of 2020, I had listened to Jack say “get out, get out get out!!”until I was hearing it in my sleep and Nicole saying “build the life you choose on your terms” and John saying “quit being a wuss and put in the hard work” sooooooo ..we traded off that subdivision home for a pretty decrepit and forgotten farm in the country. It needed SO MUCH WORK. That being said , there is not a day goes by that I don’t thank God for this farm. There’s not a season, not even a single day that I don’t love it here. I’m thankful that I had calm voices of reason to listen to during dark and scary times.
In January of this year after being a deputy clerk for almost 25 years, I quit my job at 48 to be my own boss. The hardest part was letting go of that cushy government health insurance. I’ve never in my adult life had to worry about healthcare because mine was cheap and literally covered everything. I’m doing direct primary care now.
I’m now a feral, homesteading mama who is self employed, has lots of side hustles, HODL’s bitcoin, uses Nostr, makes my own medical decisions and has a safe secluded place for my children to retreat to when the time comes within a community that I am building around us.
I am proof that if you put in the work and take a few risks every now and then, amazing growth happens.
We’re still trucking forward…learning new skills and adding new things. ❤️❤️❤️
