The Master saw that several pupils had begun to let their bodies grow soft while they studied. The next day he took them on a long walk, far from the town, and many began to grown from the exertion. The Master replied to them, “Master Kong taught that Harmony (和) is needed for a junzi. If your mind is sharp bur your body is weak, this is not right conduct (理) nor is it fidelity (信) to your body. You will grow resentful and envious of others and your Wisdom (智) will turn to mere cunning. The herbalist knows that a mixture not stirred becomes a poison instead of a remedy, thus also a student who desires virtue must exercise body as well as mind if he is to be as Heaven (天) intended him.”
