Sorry, but I'm violating the rules a little to share the five essentials I adopted as a writer:
• determination and adaptability
• creativity…not just stories, but a world & the characters who'll live in them
• self-discipline and a willingness to sacrifice to realize the writerly vision
• self-awareness and insight
• learning + knowledge + practice + finding a preferred process
