A tip that I learned a few years ago for pets who are terrorized by fireworks is to use pink noise to mask the sound. It is weighted more toward the lower frequencies than white noise and consequently works a bit better. Here's a site that can generate pink (and other types of) noise in 30-minute segments. I'll be playing some for my dogs in the next few days to reacclimate them to it before July 4.
