A lot of the technical literature on election security is gloomy, focusing on vulnerabilities and weaknesses. But all is not as bad as you might think! There's actually been enormous progress in both the theory and practice of election security in the last decade. We have robust formal requirements now ("software independence") and practical ways to achieve them ("risk-limiting audits" with existing equipment (that uses paper ballots). I'm actually an optimist here!
