I just read that Dave Grohl’s drums on QOTSA Songs for the Deaf were recorded without cymbals (using just electronic triggers for placeholders), then recording cymbals and hi-hat later. Man that must have been tedious af. But as I recall, Boston did a similar thing on their last record.
