Paul's plan is that everybody will use Thunder for the "money" part. Thunder is not one but multiple blockchains that optimize for smaller transactions and grow in size as the time passes.
I think that can work in practice, but it is so ugly! I would rather have a more elegant solution than blasting cheap transactions into blockchains that miners are running and hoping for the best.
The more elegant solution might as well be something like a big Tachyon chain, which as far as I understand scales much better than a normal blockchain and is fully private and everybody just uses that for commerce.
I could never understand the actual criticisms of Monero people against Zcash (every time I tried to ask I got the answer that it was a "fedcoin", what that means exactly and why I don't know). The Zcash technology looks good to me, but of course I don't understand it fully.
In any case, if Zcash/Tachyon is bad then I also don't see why the daily payments solution people use on eCash can't be one or more big Monero-like chains instead of Thunder. I also never heard Paul Sztorc saying anything about why he isn't pushing for a Monero-like sidechain together with the Zcash/Orchard sidechain L2L is doing, my impression is that that he just likes Zcash technology more and didn't want to confuse things with two privacy sidechains, but I think he should at leat mention the possibility, maybe some Monero enthusiasts would be excited to build it. Paul definitely doesn't think he has all the answers, he is pretty ok with being surprised by drivechain usages he hadn't anticipated.
