Well, I wouldn't have money to pay our bills if I didn't charge people for the photos I take, because that is one of my two careers. So i have to be a sorta-expert in it all, for my clients' benefit (and for my bank account).
And yup, there's a ton of expertise involved before shooting. Understanding lighting, setting up lighting correctly, properly staging and framing, etc.I do a lot of work before firing the trigger to ensure my time in post isn't crazy long. I don't waste my time shooting jpg + raw, but that's my choice of workflow.
That said, my X100T / X100 and my film cameras are my hobby devices, and I shoot jpg on the Fujifilms, and when shooting film, well, I don't have a lot of leeway in developing the film. I have a bit more when doing the enlargements, though. Mostly in Lightroom these days lol.
Three examples. First is a studio digital shot, but this is "raw" from the camera. No post done to it. This took a shit-ton of setup. Second example, is a custom film set jpg from an X100S. Third is film shot (Tri-X, Nikon FM3a, with a 50mm f1.4 lens) that I massaged in Lightroom.
