So, of the three questions I started this thread with, #3 is the easiest:
Q: Would a judge who passed the patent bar have been better equipped to decide this case?
A: No. Merely passing the patent bar doesn't mean you know anything about designs. There's no reason to assume that requiring judges to have a science/tech background would improve outcomes in this area, either.
