#7 Creedence Clearwater Revival – Chronicle: The 20 Greatest Hits
The second compliation CD on the list, Chronicle taught me to listen past the gimmick and hear the music. Perhaps gimmick isn’t the right word for it, but before I gave it a shot I always thought of CCR as, kind of, low quality hillbilly music, close to but not quite country. Turns out, its neither of those things. It took a few listens to begin to fully appreciate the music and sincerity of the writing. This album hit me a few years after #10 on this list We Sold Our Soul for Rock’N’Roll and expanded my understanding that categories can rarely fully contain anybody. The supersonic pace of “Travelin’ Band”, the upbeat optimism in “Down On the Corner”, the dark intense tone of “I Put a Spell On You”, and meandering style of “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” have all been etched into my brain in such a way that they’ll never be overplayed or dull. Plus, slower ballad like songs “Have You Ever Seen the Rain” and “Someday Never Comes” showed me that this was just really good music.
Chronicle taught me to appreciate bands and their music for themselves, not their category.
