TIL,
one of the most feared U.S. Marshals in the old west was an African slave who had beat up his owner and escaped into Indian territory where he learned to speak Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Creek. He learned how to hunt, track, and live in the wild from those tribes. After the Emancipation Proclamation, he became a successful farmer and rancher until his skills and reputation led to him being hired as a U.S. Marshal covering 75,000 square miles of Indian Territory. His reputation for tracking and hunting down murderers and cattle thieves became so feared, at least one notorious criminal surrendered when they heard he was the Marshall coming after them. He worked as a Marshal for 32 years, and retired in 1907 at age 68.
