China wants Teochew & other very distinct languages to be known as dialects, globally. Part of my family history is filled with murders & executions from imperialist China & their govt. We were displaced multiple times over hundreds of years. Our narrative history has been polluted by imperialism & very few of living Teochew peoples know their own ancestral histories, much less the thousands of struggles our peoples faced in early, forced displacements & the diaspora that followed. Very few of our Teochew peoples have intact family & cultural unity because forced displacements sever longtime family ties. We still have family members in prison - almost all are longtime political prisoners. Our modern times family members imprisoned were arrested in 1980s, 1990s & recently in past HK uprisings. Only contact we have had were medical alerts & deaths in prison notices. We have been fighting for over 25 yrs to obtain more communication with our imprisoned political family members.
Privileged people in Global North..in #Canada & USA - do not understand what our family went through & are still dealing with.
